Israel day oneberg. The Dead Seawitz.
We left for Israel last week t'do a week of touring around, eagerly awaiting transcendence. As it always does though, transcendence came at a cost. We arrived back in Turkey yesterday and I haven't been able to say much today. That place, Israel, whatever it is, whatever it evolves to be, left an indelible mark on me.
Now naturally, I felt all the effects of the religious fusion and infusion, which is saying something. The most excited I've ever gotten about religion otherwise is when I listen to Bobbie Dylan and Miss Baez do "With God On Our Side."
We spent the first day getting crispy at the Dead Sea, floating in the sea (You can actually float in the motherfucker. A wild, wild feeling) After the hoardes of tourists showed up (Who were too chickenshit to venture more than three feet into the water) we walked a few kilometres in the baking sun, had a few beers and popsicles and took to Ein Gedi national park.
There, we mingled with groups of school kids and their ARMED bodyguards and hiked throughout desert hills and waterfalls and being enamoured by the whole thing. Really incredible stuff.
A busride back through the Palestine Territories (Which lady luck slept through) to Jerusalem was followed by a quiche dinner at a veg restaurant, before some local brews at some dank bar. Good first day. Shit, an awesome first day. Here's some photos, and there's much, much more to come.
Before we left, my students told me that they believed I was going to Israel because I "Was a spy." So here we are, minutes before boarding, pretending to be the spies we thought we could be.
Sunrise from our hostel roof over Jerusalem.

Palestine checkpoint. Scary ass shit.
The Dead Sea, in dead heat.
Really! You float!

See that there? That's Jordan. Rest assured, if you made an attempt to swim for it, they were after you like you were a pork-runner.

I don't get it. You fly half-way around the word to see this country and you don't even get IN the water. Lame-o's.
Ein Gedi National Park.

Quiche.
No more quiche.
Jerusalem by night.
